Discipleship for Evangelism

“Preparation for the Second Exodus III”

(I Peter 2:9, 10)

Series:  Discipleship for Evangelism

Thesis:  The greatest sensation in life is knowing the value of looking ahead to what is next

INTRODUCTION

1.    The title of this series is Discipleship for Evangelism

2.    This is the introduction to the study:  Preparation for the Second Exodus III

3.    What is the definition of a lesson?

        a.     “a fixed period of time when people are taught about a particular subject or taught how to do something”

        b.    “an experience that teaches you how to behave better in a similar situation in the future”

4.    The book of Exodus (documents Redemption), Leviticus (documents, Holiness, Purity), Numbers (tells the story of the

Journey), the victory and defeat of God’s people in the Wilderness.

5.    What did God intend for His people Israel to become for Him (Psa 33:12; Isa. 41:8, 9)

        a.     Through the “promises made to the fathers” (Rom. 15:8), God’s desire was that Israel was to become His

“portion” or “inheritance” (Deut. 32:8, 9)—The effects of Genesis 10 and 11, with the ‘scattering’ of the peoples

set the stage for God to call and to choose Abraham and His “seed” (Gen. 12:1-3)

        b.    God surrounded and protected His people all through the wilderness (Deut. 32:10-14).

        c.     Israel had been chosen as a “special treasure” for the Lord (Deut. 7:6-9).

        d.    God’s desire was to bless and to increase His people (Deut. 7:12-16; 28:1-6).

THE FIRST “GENERATIION” OF BELIEVERS AFTER THE CROSS

1.    God reminds the ‘first generation’ of believers who lived after the Cross about the rebellion of Israel in the Exodus and

“wilderness” where they wandered for forty years (Heb. 3:7-11; Psa. 95:7-11)—a comparison between Moses and

Christ and the “generation” of forty years.

        a.     In the first message in this series about The Second Exodus we discussed the meaning of “type” and “antitype” of

               shadow and reality.

        b.    God’s encouragement to these Jewish believers was to ‘remember’ what had happened to that “first generation”

that Moses lead out of Egypt and instead pay attention (Heb. 3:12-19).

        c.     As had been the case with Israel “according to the flesh” (the natural “seed” of Abraham), Israel “according to the

spirit” (the spiritual “seed” of Abraham) was to become a “special treasure” unto the Lord (I Pet. 2:9, 10)

        d.    Israel “according to the flesh” had perished in the wilderness because of their “unbelief” (Heb. 3:19).

        e.     Israel “according to the spirit” were identified as the true “seed” of Abraham based upon their faith and

obedience to the ‘gospel of Christ’ (Gal. 3:7-9, 26-29; Heb. 5:8, 9).

2.    Old Covenant Israel had been called to become a “light to the nations” (Isa. 42:6, 7; 49:1, 6, 7, 10-12).

3,    New Covenant Israel as the “church” during the “last days” (Joel 2:28-32; Acts 2:16-21) was to preaching the “gospel

of the kingdom” as a witness to “all the nations” prior to the “end of the age” (Matt. 24:13, 14; 28:18-20; Acts 1:8).

        a.     Jesus told His people to ‘let their light so shine’ (Matt. 5:16; Phil 2:12-18), to ‘save themselves’ from that wicked

               and perverse “generation” (Acts 2:40)

THE MESSAGE OF PEACE AND VICTORY TODAY

1.    Even though we can see all that God has done during the course of redemptive history, everyday life becomes a

challenge for each one of us.

        a.     Some of us face financial challenges….

        b.    Some of us face health issues and challenges…

        c.     Some of us face relationship challenges

        d.    Some of us face work challenges (employers, employees).

        e.     Some of us face challenges with our children and grandchildren

        f.      Some of us face the feelings of loss when those we love have ‘passed away’…

2.    Some of us may face more than one of the things I just listed and the pressure builds, and the anxiety comes, the

feelings of sadness, despair, and depression, surrounds us….

THE NECESSITY OF FAITH AND TRUST OVER AGAINST UNBELIEF AND FEAR

1.    The purpose of the ‘church’ (collectively), is to become and to be a community where each of us is surrounded by all

of us—for strength, comfort, guidance, assistance, love and care.

2.    Discipleship is the process through which each of us is transformed into the “image” of Christ (Rom. 8:26-29; Phil. 2:5-

        11).

        a.     When we come to the Lord in genuine faith and obedience to the gospel, a ‘transformation’ takes place within

each one of us (whether there is some feeling that goes along with it or not)—a ‘new birth’ takes place (John 3:3-

               5; I Pet. 1:22, 23).

        b.    It is not some outward manifestation, but rather a transformation on the inside in the innermost parts of our

               being (II Cor. 4:7-18).

               1)    What is “seen” with the human eyes is NOT the reality, but rather it is the “unseen” that IS the reality.

               2)    There is a “change” that takes place in the human spirit that goes ‘out of death, into life’ (John 5:21, 24, 35)

               3)    Those ‘dead in trespasses and sins’ (Eph. 2:1-10; Col. 1:21-23; 2:6-15).

CONCLUSION

1.    The testimony of BOTH the OT and the NT is that when we trust God in every thought, word, and action, He is faithful

to keep His word and to bring us into the place of abundance and victory.

2.    The comparison between the first exodus and the events of the second exodus confirms the goodness and

faithfulness of God for His people.

3.    It also serves as a warning that not everyone ‘made it’ from Egypt into the Promised land, and likewise today, there is

no automatic provision for every human being on planet earth—separate and apart from the conditions of faith,

repentance, confession and baptism into Christ, being added by the Spirit to the “body of Christ” (I Cor. 12:13).

4.    Those who enter into covenant with God, become His children by faith and are ‘delivered out of darkness’ into His

        marvelous ‘light’ (I Pet. 2:9, 10)
