Series: The One-Another Way

LESSON #14 – WEIGHING ONE ANOTHER

QUESTIONS FOR DISSCUSSION

1. What principles can we derive from this compendium of exhortations about weighing others?

2. Are we accountable to others for our spoken words?

~ Do we have a responsibility to teach truth truthfully?

3. What is meant in James3:1?

Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we shall incur a stricter judgment.

~ Is it a serious thing to instruct and/or mislead others by our words and deeds?

~ Describe what is meant by the paralysis of analysis?

- Can a Christian become so intimidated by Js.3:1, that he or she refuses to teach others.

- In some sense, are we teaching others even when we decide not to teach??

4. Is gullibility a shortcoming?

~ We should receive the word with great eagerness? - Acts 17:11b

~ But we should also examine the Scriptures to check the message for accuracy? - Acts 17:11c

- Do we not have the need to be discerning?

5. Do we have an obligation to correct those who speak wrongly?

- Does this include all speech?

i.e., not just “church speak” (sermons & lessons) but the words we speak in everyday life.

- If someone lies, do we need to correct them?

Explain the difference between misunderstanding or misinterpreting a text versus being a false teacher?

 - If someone takes God's name in vain, do we need to caution them?

- If a brother or sister is engaged in sinful behavior, do we need to hold them accountable?

6. Do our need to weigh the actions of our brothers and sisters?

 ~ Read 1Jn.3:10

~ Does weighing others mean that we need to snap on one another the moment one stumbles?

- Read 2Tim.2:24-25 and Gal.6:1

- The Scriptures admonish us to be quick to hear and SLOW TO SPEAK? cf. Js.1:19

~ What is the opposite of being gullible?

Discernment … Examination … Weighing … Analysis … etc.

- Yet is it not detrimental to be constantly suspicious?

- Does it really help others to know that they are “under the magnifying glass”?

7. In correcting others if it important and wise to be discreet?

~ Consider the manner in which Aquila & Priscilla handled the mistaken teachings of Apollos.  cf. Acts 18:14-28

~ What is meant by Col.4:6?

Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned, as it were, with salt,

so that you may known how you should respond to each person.
