Lesson #14 - Weighing One Another

Series: The One-Another Way

LESSON #14 – WEIGHING ONE ANOTHER

PREFACE

Our aim in this study is to extract some general principles from examining a wide collection of New Testament texts.

The New Testament times were a unique period in history.  In entering the Judaic world of the first century,

Jesus laid the foundation for the establishment of a New Covenant.  Jesus appointed others to come follow Him.

In addition to being taught by Jesus, the Lord's apostles were also guided by The Holy Spirit (Mt.10:19-20 & Jn.16:14),

and provided with signs and wonders to confirm and corroborate the veracity of their spoken and written messages.

cf. Mk.16:15-20 and Heb.2::3-4

The body of work that we commonly call our New Testament reflects efforts to present the gospel of Christ.

The message of the apostles and disciples - - the preaching of the gospel was disputed by many.

It would an understatement to say there was substantial opposition to Jesus and His followers.

Many of the exhortations listed below are best understood when kept anchored in their first-century setting.

Beware of:  false prophets (Mt.7:15-20) … scribes (Lk.20:46) … the leaven of the Pharisees & Sadducees (Mt.16:6).

Beware (Lk.12:1) = Watch Out For (Mk.8:15) = Be On Your Guard (Acts 20:28).

Jesus admonished His disciples be FRUIT-INSPECTORS you will know them by their fruits (Mt.7:16 and Lk.6:44).

Jesus warned, TAKE CARE WHAT YOU LISTEN TO (Mk.4:24).

The New Testament epistles are also filled with one-another warnings about false teachers.

The numerous admonition point to the for “sifting” or “weighing” the words and/or actions of others.
