In what way is the forgiveness of sins procured by an act of redemption?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1) WHAT IS THE MEANING OF REDEMPTION?

The New Testament Greek word for redemption is “apolutrosis”, which means a loosing away

Needing a loosing away speaks of a previous bondage.

~ In 2Tim.2:26, Paul speaks of the snare of the devil and being held captive by him.

Heb.2:14-15 / …Through death (Jesus) might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is,

the devil; and might deliver those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.

cf. Acts 26:18 / to open their eyes that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God.

This power of death was exercised by the Old Testament Law.

? Rom.5:20 / the Law came in that the transgression might increase (i.e., be magnified).

? Gal.3:10 / For as many as are under the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written,

‘Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the Law, to perform them.’.

? 1Cor.15:56 / The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the Law.

? Rom.7:24 / Wretched man that I am!  Who will set me free from THE BODY OF THIS DEATH?

Rom.8:21-22 / the creation itself will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the

children of God.  For we know the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.

This language of redemption receives its fullest realization in THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE NEW COVENANT.

The Old Covenant was The Law of Sin and Death.

It shut up all men under sin (Gal.3:22)Mankind was kept in custody under the Law (Gal.3:23).

Contrariwise, the New Covenant brought FREEDOM (Gal.5:1).

Rom.8:2 / For the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.

2) HOW WAS MAN’S REDEMPTION MADE POSSIBLE?

While frequently foreshadowed in the Old Testament, full redemption came when God sent JESUS to be our Redeemer.

~ In order to secure redemption, a price had to be paid.

? The high price required by our Holy God was that of A PERFECT LAMB. – 1Pet.1:18-19

? That SPOTLESS LAMB was Christ Jesus! – Jn.1:29

? Rom.3:24 / redemption comes IN CHRIST JESUS

?  Eph.1:7 / In HIM we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our sins, according to the riches of His grace.

Gal.3:13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a CURSE for us.

2Cor.5:21(God) made (Jesus) who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf…  cf. 1Pet.2:24

~ Only the precious blood of Christ (His atoning death on our behalf) could pay the RANSOM.

Mt.20:28 / …The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.

cf. 1Tim.2:6 / (Jesus) gave Himself as a ransom for all

3. HOW CAN ONE COME TO BE CLOTHED IN CHRIST JESUS?

Gal.3:16-27 / For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.   cf. Rom.6:3-6
