  1. Is it impossible to tame the tongue? – cf. Js.3:8

  Does James chapter three give you the idea that this is a hopeless undertaking?

  Is there no use in trying?

  Can you witness about how God has helped you tame your tongue?

  The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail more than his tongue!

3. What word pictures does James use to describe the bad tongue? – cf. Js.3:5f

  a forest fire … a world of iniquity … a restless evil … deadly poison … bitter water 

  Have you tasted the damage of a tongue out of control on a first-handed basis?

  Can our tongues destroy our marriages?

  Has your tongue ever put you in a really hurtful situation?

4. What is the source of our tongue problems? – cf. Mt.12:34 and Lk.6:45

  As Christians, does our speech betray us?

5. Does our culture hurt or help?

  Is your home a place where wholesome speech abides?

  What about your workplace?

  What about our “playgrounds” – the golf course…the ball fields…gym…etc?

 6. Are we accountable for the words we speak? – cf. Mt.12:36-37

  Every careless word that men shall speak, they shall render account in the day of judgment.

For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned.

  Does God hold us accountable?

  Do we ask others to help in holding us accountable?
