LESSON #7 – TAKING UP ROOTS IN THE PROMISED LAND

Dividing Up The Land / Chapters Thirteen Thru Nineteen

1. The Twelve Tribes of Israel (as listed in Gen.49) included:

Reuben …Simeon … Levi … Judah … Zebulun … Issachar … Dan … Gad … Asher … Naphtali … Jospeh … Benjamin

  Which of these twelve tribes actually received a land grant?  See map on flipside.

  Who were the exceptions?

~ Joseph’s double portion was given to his sons, Ephraim and Manasseh. – cf. Gen.48:1-6

~ What about the tribe of Levi? – cf. Josh.13:14 & 33 and 18:7 with Num.18:20 and Deut.10:9 & 18:1-2

2. As a representative of the tribe of Judah (Num.13:6), what request was granted to Caleb? – cf. Num.14:24 with Josh.14:6-15

  So Joshua blessed him, and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance / Josh.14:13

  How old was Caleb at this time? – Josh.14:10

  What made Caleb so special?

  What intimidating group populated this region? – Josh.14:12 & 15

Special Appointments / Chapters Twenty Thru Twenty-Two

1. What was the purpose of the cities of refuge? – Joshua 20

  Six cities spread out across the land:  Kedesh … Shechem … Kiriath-arba … Bezer … Ramoth … & Golan. – vs.8

  These cities provided sanctuary (grace) for persons committing accidents until justice could be fairly dispensed.

2. What were the cities of the Levites? – Joshua 21

  These cities provided dwelling places and property rights for the tribe of Levi. – vs.2 and Num.35:1-8

  These forty-eight cities, some with pasture lands (vs.41) were scattered throughout the land of Promise.

* Note:  While the Levites lived the great part of the year in their own cities, they came at fixed intervals to

take part in the services of the temple.  The length of the terms of service cannot be definitively ascertained.

3. Of the twelve tribes, which ones were “planted” on the eastern side of the Jordan? – Joshua 22

  What happened when the transjordanian tribes erected an(other) altar? – vs.10f

~ Describe this tense confrontation with the tribes of Gad, (half) Manasseh and Reuben. – vss.13f

~ What explanation was give for the existence of the altar? – vss.21f

- After the conquest, Israel’s singular place of worship was moved from Gilgal to Shiloh.

cf. Josh.18:1 with Deut.12:5 and Judg.21:19

- Shiloh was located near Bethel in the tribal region of Ephraim on the wester side of the Jordan river.
