Lesson #12 - Sabbaticals, Festivals & Conquest / Ex 23

Series: God's Man Moses - Israel's Exodus From Egypt

LESSON #12

Sabbaticals, Festivals & Conquest / Exodus 23

Sabbath Laws / Vss.10-13

1. Regarding the sowing of their fields, what was to take place in the seventh year?

You shall let it rest and lie fallow

Who could reap the benefits of these fallow fields?

What applied to the fields also applied to the grape vineyards and olive groves.

2. What was one of the primary purposes of the weekly Sabbath?

What day of the week was the Sabbath?

National Feasts Days / Vss.14-19

1. Three annual festivals:

  Feast of Unleavened Bread

Feast Of Harvest – First fruits

Feast of Ingathering – at the end of the year

2. These are feasts to the Lord.

  Offerings were required.

At each of these three festivals all Jewish males were to appear before the Lord (i.e., at the house of the Lord).

Sacrificial specifications were to be strictly followed.  cf. vss.18-19

Conquest Strategy / Vss.20-33

 1. As they began the process of the conquest of the promised land, an angel of God would lead the way.

Be on your guard and obey his voice; do not be rebellious toward him

for he will not pardon your transgression, since MY NAME is in him.

God promised to be an enemy to Israel’s enemies - - I will completely destroy them.

These nations included the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites.

2. The children of Israel are warned not to assimilate into these heathen cultures.

You shall not worship their gods, nor serve them, nor do according to their deeds.

They were to overthrow them and break their “sacred” pillars to pieces.

You shall make no covenants with them or with their gods. – vs.32

They shall not live in your land…if you serve their gods, it will surely be a snare to you. – vs.33

3. God’s blessings would abound among the Israelites if they served Jehovah God.

Their bread and water would be blessed.

Sicknesses, miscarriages and barrenness would be removed and they would live long in the land.  cf. Deut.4:40

In a piece-meal fashion God promised to help them conquer the land.
