Series: God's Man Moses - Israel's Exodus From EgyptLESSON #4
GOD STRETCHES OUT HIS HAND AGAINST EGYPT
God Promises To Act / Chapter Six
1. God assures Moses that Pharaoh (under compulsion) will let Israel go free. – vss.1-13
God Almighty (the God of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob) will now become the LORD of Israel.
~ He remembers the covenant and hears the groanings and it has now come time to act.
~ I will deliver you from their bondage…and will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. – vs.6
~ I will take you for MY PEOPLE … and bring you to the land. – vs.7
Moses informed the people but the were despondent and did not listen.
~Moses again petitions God saying, “I am unskilled in speech”.
2. A history of the heads of Israel is provided. – vss.14-30
Once again, Moses wavers: “I am unskilled in speech; how then will Pharaoh listen to me?” – vs.30
The Plagues Begin / Chapters Seven, Eight And Nine
1. Aaron’s serpentine rod and water into blood – chapter seven
As the plagues begin, Moses is 80 years old and Aaron is 83 years old.
~Aaron’s rod (serpent) swallowed up those of Pharaoh’s magicians (Jannes & Jambres / 2Tim.3:8). – vs.12
~The Nile is turned to blood - - even pools, reservoirs and water stored in vessels of wood & stone.
~ All the fish died and the land became foul – vss.18 & 21
~ Pharaoh’s magicians replicated this miracle and still Pharaoh turns aside, unmoved.
In what way did God harden Pharaoh’s heart and why? – Gen.7:3, 13 & 22; 8:15, & 32 and 9:7, 12 & 34-35
Note 7:5 – And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out My hand on Egypt… cf. 9:16
2. Frogs … Gnats (lice) … and swarms of insects – chapter eight
Frogs appeared everywhere “and covered the land of Egypt” - -
from the Nile river they moved into houses, courts, fields, bedrooms, beds, ovens, bowls. – vss.6 & 13
~ Again, Pharaoh’s magicians duplicated (counterfeited) this miracle. – vs.9
However, the magicians were stumped by the gnats, declaring, this is the finger of God – vs.19
Next came swarms of insects, everywhere except in Goshen (where the Israelites resided). – vss.21-22
~ Pharaoh relented somewhat and proposed that the children of Israel sacrifice to their God in Egypt.
~ Moses prayed to God on Pharaoh’s behalf and the insects disappeared (not one remained / vs.31).
~ But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also, and he did not let the people go.
3. Livestock pestilence … boils … and hailstorms – chapter nine
Horses, donkeys, camels, herds and flocks were stricken with a severe pestilence (except those of Israel).
Boils broke out on all of Egypt (man and beasts) - - even the magicians couldn’t stand. – vs.11
There was hail, and fire flashing continually in the midst of the hail – vs.24
