Misery, Multiplication And Midwives / Chapter One
1. After the death of Joseph, how did the nation of Israel fare in the land of Egypt? - vss.7-10
They multiplied and grew mighty and came to be viewed as a threat by the new Pharaoh.
How did the new king/pharaoh deal with them? - - note God’s words to Abram in Gen.15:13-14
2. How did the rulers of Egypt attempt to combat Israel’s rapid growth? – vss.11-22
Taskmasters were appointed and hard labor was inflicted.
Yet 4 The more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied
The Israelites were compelled to labor even more rigorously and their lives were made very bitter.
Pharaoh ordered the Egyptian midwives to instigate infanticide when a male child was born.
Every son who is born you are to cast into the Nile, and every daughter you are to keep alive
3. What undermined this plan to exterminate the Hebrew male newborns? – vss.17 & 20-21
The midwives feared God
God was good to them (the Egyptian midwives) … He established households for them.
The Birth And Awakening Of Moses / Chapter Two
1. Explain the circumstances of the birth of one male child from the house of Levi? – vss.1-10
Hidden for three months after birth.
Set afloat in the Nile river with Moses’ sister watching carefully.
Retrieved by Pharaoh’s daughter / When she opened (the basket), she saw the child…and she had pity on him.
Nursed by his own mother (who was even paid to do to do what she longed to do).
Pharaoh’s daughter names him, Moses - - I drew him out of the water.
2. After Moses grew up (at the age of 40/Acts 7:23), what happened when his visited his fellow Hebrews? – vss.11-15
How did Moses know that the Hebrews were his brethren?
What provoked Moses to kill an Egyptian? Was this AN ACT OF FAITH? cf. Heb.11:24-27 & Acts 7:24-25
Why did Moses become afraid and what was Pharaoh’s intent?
3. To where did Moses flee? – vss.16-25
In Midian, Moses meets Reuel … marries Reuel’s daughter, Zipporah … and has a son named Gershom.
When that Pharaoh died, The sons of Israel sighed … and they cried out
So God heard their groaning; and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
And God saw the sons of Israel, and God took notice of them.
