Lesson #7 – Baptism & Faith, Repentance & Confession
Series: Baptism 101 - What The Bible Says About BaptismLesson #7 – Baptism & Faith, Repentance & Confession
1) Does baptism stand alone in bringing salvation in Christ?
A fuller or more complete understanding of God’s plan of redemption shows
that while baptism is a very important step, it is not the only step to salvation.
In baptism we are “united with Christ” (Rom.6:3-4) and “clothed with Christ” (Gal.3:27).
Yet, our baptism in a watery grave means little if it is not
preceded & predicated upon faith, repentance and confession.
2) Is BELIEVING FAITH essential to salvation in Christ?
Heb.11:6 / without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe…
Jn.8:24 / unless you believe that I am He, you shall die in your sins
Jn.3:16 / whoever believes in Him shall not perish cf. Jn.3:36
Rom.3:28 / a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the Law
Rom.4:3 / Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness
3) Is REPENTANCE essential to salvation in Christ?
Lk.13:3 & 5 / unless you repent you will all likewise perish
Acts 2:38 / repent and be baptized…
Acts 11:18 / God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life
Is repentance just “being sorry for sin” or does it demand a change of heart & behavior? – 2Cor.7:10
4) Is CONFESSION essential to salvation in Christ?
This is not confession of sins (that’s repentance), but the confession of Christ as Lord.
Mt.10:32-33 / whoever confesses Me before men, him will I also confess before My Father
Rom.10:10 / with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation
What is “the good confession”?
cf. Lk.23:1-3 and 1Tim.6:12-13
Acts 8:37 / I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God
Baptism must be done with a heart of faith … a commitment to repent of sins …
and a public acknowledgement of Jesus Christ as Lord & Savior.
