Lesson #3 – Anchored In Jesus
Series: Baptism 101 - What The Bible Says About BaptismLesson #3 – Anchored In Jesus
1) In the New Testament, what words or concepts do we often find associated with baptism?
Water – Jn.3:23 and Acts 8:36-38
Forgiveness – Acts 2:38 and 22:16
Burial – Rom.6:4 and Col.2:12
Jesus – associated with baptism more than any other word or concept is the name of Jesus!
2) Is baptism more than just a watery grave (burial) for the forgiveness of sins?
That which makes baptism efficacious (power-filled and effective) is 4 JESUS.
Immersion in water has no power to forgive in and of itself.
That which makes baptism powerful is that we are baptized INTO CHRIST.
3) Consider specific blessings that come to us from the blood/death of Christ.
Justification & Propitiation (Atonement) / Rom.3:24-26 Redemption / Eph.1:7
Access / Eph.2:13 Reconciliation & Peace / Col.1:20 Sanctification / Heb.13:12
Forgiveness / Col.1:14 Cleansing / 1Jn.1:7 with Acts 22:16 & Rev.1:5
4) How does one get into Christ Jesus?
Gal.3:27 notes that in “baptized into Christ” we come to be “clothed with Christ”.
5) New Testament baptism is done IN THE NAME OF JESUS.
Take time to read each one of the following citations from the book of Acts 7
2:38; 8:16; 10:48; 19:5 and 22:16
6) What does it mean to be baptized in someone’s name?
1Cor.1:13 / Paul was not crucified for you, was he? … were you baptized in the name of Paul?
“In the name of” means “by the authority of”.
Tim Alsup writes: “…if you were baptized into someone’s name in biblical times, you were committing yourself to following his teachings. You were aligning yourself with the religious teacher whose baptism you accepted.”
7) Does baptism SAVE us?
Read 1Pet.3:21
Our baptism saves us because it places our life into Christ Jesus.
8) Make a list of some excuses people sometimes give for not being baptized?
