HIS STORY IS OUR SONG I

“The SONG of Mary”

(Luke 1:46-55)

Series:  How God has spoken to the needs of humanity.

Thesis:  There is an impact of God’s Story from Genesis to Revelation

INTRODUCTION

1.    The title of this series is His Story is Our Song

2.    This is the first message in the series, “The Song of Mary”

3.    As we approach the final days of seasonal celebration the world around us pauses to reflect about the sending of

        Jesus into the world.

        a.     Two of the ‘gospel accounts’ provides us with ‘snapshots’ of what was taking place in an isolated, obscure part

of the world—Matthew and Luke provide certain details of these events.

                1)    The young woman, probably in her late teens (the text does not say), who had become ‘betrothed’ or

‘espoused’ to the young man Joseph.

               2)    This was more than what we refer to as an ‘engagement’ because both were considered joined together

from the time of being ‘espoused’ (usually a period of about a year, sometimes longer)—and was usually

arranged by the parents or family members.

THE MARCH OF REDEMPTIVE HISTORY

1.    The events recorded in the two gospel accounts are inseparable from what had been promised 4,000 years earlier

at the time of Adam and Eve, in the Garden of Eden (Gen. 3:15; 12:1-3; 17:1-10; 26:1-5).

        a.     God, down through redemptive history was writing HIS story in the pages of Scripture, and through the

               prophets (Isa. 7:10-14; Matt. 1:18-25).

        b.    Joseph was concerned by what Mary had told him about ‘being with child’ at this time (a natural reaction).

               1)    They were ‘betrothed’ and Joseph is referred to as her “husband” (1:19).

               2)    Joseph loved Mary and did not want to put her to ‘open shame’ and would have “divorced” her privately

(1:19)—according to “the law” the penalty of sexual unfaithfulness (fornication) could have resulted in

being “put to death” (Deut. 22:23-26).—“send away” to “dismiss” “to release”

        c.     God sent a messenger (angel) to Joseph to let him know that this was the work of God (Matt. 1:21)—the means

through which God would “save His people from their sins” (v. 21)—the name Yeshua (Jesus) means “savior”

        d.    What had been written down through redemptive history was coming to pass just the way God said that it would

               be (Gal. 4:4-6).

THE MISSION OF JESUS COMING INTO THE WORLD

1.    The purpose of God is revealed to Mary (Luke 1:26-38)

2.    This would be the “fulfillment” of all that had been promised that would bring about redemption, reconciliation, and

restoration of all that had been lost from the time of Adam and Eve (Acts 3:19-26; 4:12).

3.    Mary was given the blessing of giving birth to Jesus, the Son of God (Luke 1:46-55).

4.    Jesus, left the ‘glory of the Father’ and became “one of us” (a human being) (Phil. 2:5-11).

        a.     Jesus was “obedient” becoming the “author” of eternal salvation (Heb. 5:8, 9).

        b.    Jesus was resurrected and glorified with the glory He had ‘before time began’ (John 17:1-5)

WE HAVE IT ALL IN JESUS

1.    The essence of the “gospel” is that we “have it all” in Jesus (Col. 2:9-15).

2.    Joseph and Mary put their trust in God’s Word to them—100%

3.    Our goal and desire must be ever to put our trust in God’s Word 100%--knowing that God is at work in our lives each

and every day as we walk with Him.

CONCLUSION

1.    Do we have the confidence and assurance in our daily lives as to who God is, and what God has done?

2.    Can we sing the song of Mary and ‘magnify the Lord’ through our thoughts, words, and actions here in this

        community?

3.    Are we ready to trust God—right here, and right now?
