Series: The One-Another Way

LESSON #15 – TEACHING ONE ANOTHER

A WORD OF CAUTION

The apostle James writes (Js.3:1) - -

Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we shall incur a stricter judgment.

This exhortation is not meant to deter Christians from teaching responsibly, but to warn Judaizers about false teaching.

e.g., 1Tim.1:7 / wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either

what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.

1Pet.4:10-11 / whoever speaks, let him speak, as it were, the utterances of God   cf. 1Cor.4:6

MANY AND VARIED INSTRUCTORS

The great commission was given specifically to the apostles?  cf. Mt.28:16-20  and  Mk.16:14-16  with  Mt.24:14

One of the central focuses of the early church was the aim to cling to the teachings of the apostles.  cf. Acts 2:42 & 20:20

Yet note 2Tim.2:2 where Paul directs Timothy - - the things which you have heard in the presence

of many witnesses, these entrust to (other) faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.

Church elders are to be “able to teach” (1Tim.3:3 and Titus 1:9).

cf. 1Tim.5:17 & Heb.13:7 & 17

Standing at a podium is not the only way to teach.  Some are superb in teaching privately and informally.

In New Testament times many engaged in teaching - - the apostles were not the only ones who engaged in teaching.

Lk.10:1ff records the sending out of the seventy (sometimes called the “limited commission”.

cf. Rom.12:7;  Eph.4:11-12;  1Tim.4:13 & 16;  2Tim.2:24  and  Titus 2:1 & 15

A husband/wife team, Aquila & Priscilla taught Apollos (Acts 18:24-26).

Fathers are to teach their children (Eph.6:4).

Grandmothers and mothers are to teach their younger ones (2Tim.1:5)

Older men are to sound in faith and older women are charged to engage in teaching what is good (Titus 2:2-5).

Younger men are to possess purity of doctrine and be sound in speech (Titus 2:6-8).

Singers engage in instructing one another (Col.3:16) - - let the word of Christ richly dwell within you,

with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs...

In Heb.5:11f, Paul admonishes ones stunted in their growth, saying, Though by this time you ought to be teachers,

you have need again for someone to teach your the elementary principles of the oracles of God.

AN OBLIGATION TO SUPPORT

Was the early church taught to support her instructors?

Gal.6:6 / let the one who is taught the word share all good things with him who teachers.

1Thess.5:12-13 / appreciate those who diligently labor among you...esteem them highly

1Tim.5:17 / worthy of double honor … the laborer is worthy of his hire  cf. Lk.10:7
