Lesson #5 - Blood

Series: One Word

LESSON #5 – BLOOD

Intro:  The Scriptures are full of blood!  The shedding of blood is an indispensable element in procuring man’s atonement.

Atonement seeks to address man’s sinfulness.  How can we humans come to be “at one” with our Creator and God?

Behind the scenes of the many blood offerings depicted in the Old Testament is the concept of a substitutionary sacrifice.

This is the focus of that grand text of Isaiah chapter 53:  He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our sins.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1) WHAT IS OUR HUMAN PLIGHT?

Our sinfulness presents a problem from which we cannot extricate ourselves.

Your iniquities have made a SEPARATION between you and your God and your sins have hidden His face from you… / Isa.59:2

…There is none righteous, not even one…(Rom.3:10)…all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom.3:23).

Our sinful state requires redemption:  a price paid that is acceptable to our holy God.

2) WHAT WAS/IS THE PRICE FOR OUR SINS?

Why was Cain’s offering rejected by God but Abel’s was accepted by God? – Gen.4:1-5

The Passover feast of ancient Israel entailed the sprinkling of the blood of a lamb. – cf. Ex.12

To secure “the exodus” (freedom from bondage) the blood of a perfect lamb had to be applied (Ex.12:22).

And THE BLOOD shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I SEE THE BLOOD

I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt (Ex.12:13)..

3. WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF THE MANY OLD TESTAMENT TYPES?

The apostle Paul emphasizes that the Law has become a tutor to lead us to Christ, that we may be justified by faith (Gal.3:24).

All of the various types and shadows of salvation find their fulfillment (their true meaning) in Christ Jesus.

This is seen most vividly in the ancient Passover symbols.

…You were not redeemed with perishable things like silver and gold...

but with PRECIOUS BLOOD, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the BLOOD OF CHRIST (1Pet.1:18-19).

In 1Cor.5:7, Paul declares, Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.

4) NOTICE THE VARIOUS NEW TESTAMENT PASSAGES THAT CONNECT OUR ATONEMENT TO THE BLOOD OF CHRIST.

Lk.22:20 / …This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood  cf. Mk.14:24 and 1Cor.11:25

Acts 20:28 / …shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood  cf. Rev.5:9

Rom.3:24-25 / justified…by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus…a propitiation in His blood

Rom.5:9 / Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath to come…

Eph.1:7 / In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses

Col.1:20 / through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross

Heb.13:12 / therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood

Heb.13:20 / (God)… brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant…

Rev.1:5 / …to Him who loves us, and released us from our sins by His blood

Rev.7:14 / they have washed their robes and made them while in the blood of the Lamb

5) IS THE BLOOD OF CHRIST ESSENTIAL TO OUR SALVATION?

Heb.9:22 / …all things are cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

Heb.9:12 / through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

Lev.17:11 / For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to

make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood by reason of the life that makes atonement.

The OT prophet Jeremiah foresees the establishment of new covenant wherein God declares (Jer.31-31-34):

I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.

To “drink the blood of Christ” (Jn.6:51f) is to receive all the benefits brought to us by His death and life-giving blood.
