Lesson #1 - A New Day Begins

Series: No Time For Neutrality

LESSON #1 - A NEW DAY BEGINS

The Commissioning Of Joshua / Chapter One

1. When was Joshua actually commissioned?

  After whose death? – vs.1a

How was Joshua “notified” of his “calling”? – vs.1b

cf. Moses’ farewell counsel where he speaks of the leadership of Joshua - Deut.31:3f

What was the essence of God’s promise(s)?

Arise and cross this Jordan (vs.2) … I will not fail you or forsake you (vs.5)

Josephus notes that Joshua was 40 years old at the time of The Exodus.

How long was Joshua’s preparation period (schooling)?  How long were they in the wilderness?

2. How was Joshua prepared in advance for this extraordinary undertaking?

Born in Egypt – the firstborn (eldest) son of Nun – 1Chron.7:27

The attendant of Moses from his youth – Num.11:28

His name was changed from Hoshea to Joshua (the Lord is salvation) by Moses - Num.13:16

  Wilderness Experiences:

War with Amalek – Ex.17:8-16

Servant to Moses on the mount – Ex.24:13-18

  Spying Out the Promised-Land – Num.13:1 thru 14:10

Moses laid his hands on him (appointing him) just prior to death – Deut.34:9

3. After all of the above preparations, what would now be required of Joshua?

How does one follow Moses?

  Be strong and courageous – vss.6, 7, 9 & 18   cf. Deut.31:7-8

  Be obedient – vss.7f

What was “the book of the Law”? – vs.8

Notice this emphasis in Joshua’s “farewell address” – cf. Josh.23:6-8

4. Consider some of Joshua’s first commands:

  Prepare provisions – vs.11

Note ?  Their daily bread (manna) was about to cease.

What special reminder was given to the tribes of Reuben, Gad and ½ Manasseh – vss.12f     cf. Deut.3:8-19

5. What was the response of the people? – vs.16f

All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go…we will obey you.

Note ? obedience brings blessing!

Rebels will be put to death! – vs.18

P.S.  General Douglas MacArthur listed Joshua among the few truly great generals of world history.

President Theodore Roosevelt often mentioned that the book of Joshua was his favorite Bible book.
