God On The Mount

Moses  Goes Up / Chapter Nineteen

1. In the third month after leaving Egypt the children of Israel encamped at the base of Mount Sinai.

Moses ascends the mountain and there on the mountaintop God speaks to Moses. – vs.3

  The essence of God’s first message is to urge the people to HEED - - to obey and keep God’s laws.

  If they would be true to God’s word, God would make them a holy nation.

2. Moses descends to deliver God’s “terms”. – vs7

  With the elders of the people present, the children of Israel pledge their loyalty and faithfulness:

All that the Lord has spoken we will do!

3. Moses ascends once again to deliver the pledge of the people. – vs.8b

  Why did God speak to the people from the cloud ? – vs.9

  What’s involved in “consecration” and why was there a need for such? – vss.10 & 15

  Why was it necessary for the people to have set boundaries?

~Are there consequences to disobedience? – vss.12-13 with 21-22

~What is the emphasis of their boundaries - - what were they teaching the people?

4. On the third day God descends. – vss.11, 15 & 18f

  Vs.11 states, on the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all

  In what way did the people SEE God?

  How would you define the word, theophany ?

God’s Word Comes Down / Chapter Twenty

1. God delivers the Decalogue - - The Ten commandments. – vss.1-17

  Can you enumerate the ten commandments using one key word for each command?

~ Are all of the commandments equally important?

~Is there one in particular that you struggle to “keep”?

2. How did the people respond? - vs.18

   Why did they tremble and what was their posture?

  What did they want Moses to do for them? - - What is a mediator? – vs.19

  Here again, we witness God testing Israel’s fidelity. – vs.20

3. Specification about altars. – vss.24f

  Where were they to be constructed and what was their purpose?

  If stones was used, why were they not to use stone-cutting instruments?

  Why were “steps” forbidden in the construction of an altar?

  Would it have been sinful for Israel to alter God’s altar stipulations?  Did they ever do this?

? Your assignment for next week:  read Exodus 21, 22 & 23 4 regarding various rules and regulations.
