Lesson #8 – What About SALVATION BY FAITH ONLY?

Series: Baptism 101 - What The Bible Says About Baptism

Lesson #8 – What About  SALVATION  BY  FAITH  ONLY?

1) Have you ever heard a preacher teach that FAITH is all that’s needed to be saved?

Usually a passage is quoted leading others to conclude that merely believing brings salvation.

For example, Jn.3:16 / whoever believe in Him should not perish but have eternal life

But consider Js.2:14 & 17 / what use is it, my brethren, if a man says he has faith, but

he has no works. Can that faith save him? … Even so faith, if it has no works is dead.

James uses Abraham as an illustration of “faith in action”.

cf. Heb.11:8 / by faith Abraham OBEYED

Rom.1:5 & 16:26 speaks of “the obedience of faith”

Js.2:22 / faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected

What’s the difference in salvation by OT meritorious works versus salvation by NT obedient faith?

  Rom.4:2-5

  Eph.2:8-10

2) How did Peter & Paul conclude their sermons?

Acts 2:38 / repent and…be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins

Acts 3:19 / repent therefore and return, that you sins may be wiped away

Acts 10:48 / he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ

Acts 16:13-15 / when (Lydia) and her household had been baptized

Acts 16:32-33 / (Paul) spoke the word of the Lord to (the Philppian jailor) together

with all who were in his house.  And (the jailor)  took them that very hour of the night

and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household.

Acts 18:18 / Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, believed in the Lord with all his household,

and many of the Corinthians when they heard were believing and being baptized.

3) Can you cite New Testament examples of people who believed but were not saved?

Jn.8:31 & 44 - - even though Jesus was speaking to “Jews who believed in Him”,

He went on to say, “you are of your father the devil”.

Jn.12:42-43 refers to Jewish rulers who believed in Him…but were not confessing Him

Js.2:19 – the demons BELIEVE, but true faith required obedience
