Lesson #6 – Baptism & Change

Series: Baptism 101 - What The Bible Says About Baptism

Lesson #6 – Baptism & Change

1) Does baptism actually bring about A CHANGE OF STATUS?

The act of baptism places us “in Christ Jesus” – in baptism we are “clothed with Christ” (Gal.3:27).

Our just & holy God now views us through the lens of the blood of Christ.

In being baptized into Christ we are saved (1Pet.3:21 & Eph.2:18).

In being baptized into Christ we are forgiven (Acts 2:38 & Col.1:14).

In being baptized into Christ we are redeemed (1Pet.1:18-19)

In being baptized into Christ we are freed (Rom.6:7).

In being baptized into Christ we are justified (Rom.3:24).

In being baptized into Christ we are reconciled (2Cor.5:20 & Col.1:20).

In being baptized into Christ we are cleansed - - our sins are washed away (1Cor.6:11 & Acts 22:16).     ?       ?      ?

All of the above are legal terms for our renewed status in the sight of God.

Without Christ and our baptism which places us in Christ we are under the law of sin & death (Ro.6:23).

Stated positively, we become “the righteousness of God IN HIM” (2Cor.5:21).

John Newton (Amazing Grace) got it right4 I once was lost, but now I’m found.

Edward Mote (My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less) got it right 7

dressed in His righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne.

Is baptism an oath or a pledge which requires commitment & fidelity?

Baptism is the ceremony/rite that weds us to Christ (2Cor.11:2).

Baptism is the ceremony/rite that grants us citizenship (Eph.2:19).

2) Does baptism bring about A CHANGE IN BEHAVIOR?

Repentance is a natural presupposition to baptism (Acts 17:30 & 2Pet.3:9).

What does it mean to repent?

Discuss some Bible examples of true repentance.  e.g. Acts 2:38 & Lk.15:18

Note 2Cor.5:15 / (Christ) died for all, that they who live should no longer live for themselves…

Baptism into Christ requires THE CRUCIFIXION OF SELF (Gal.2:20).

What does it mean to die daily?

  cf. Lk.9:23 and 1Cor.15:31

How important is it for all Christians (new & old) to continually be in “a growing mode”?

  cf. 2Pet.1:5-11 and Gal.5:16-25

John underscores the importance of “walking in the light” (1Jn.1:5-10).
