Colossians 1:13–22. 1

Central message: The Father brings us into the kingdom of His Son. Through Christ, we receive rescue, redemption, reconciliation, and the hope of restoration. 1

I. Introduction: The Question of Allegiance 2

  • The opening foundation: God created the world and promised blessing to all families of the earth through Abraham. Verses: Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 12:3. 3
  • The central question: “Who and what has the final word and authority in my life?” Contrast the pull of sin with Christ’s call to forgiveness and faithful living. 2
  • The foundation of our confidence: Christ stands above every created power. All things exist through Him and for Him, and He holds all things together. Verses: Colossians 1:15–17. 4

II. Rescue: God Changes Our Position 5

Key verse: Colossians 1:13. God delivers us from the power of darkness and brings us into the kingdom of His beloved Son. 6

  • Material: Salvation begins with God’s initiative. He gives us freedom from the old authority and a new belonging under Christ’s rule. 5
  • Illustration: Receiving citizenship in a new country changes a person’s belonging immediately, while learning its ways takes time. Likewise, our daily habits should increasingly reflect our belonging to Christ. 7
  • Application: Identify an old loyalty that still influences your choices and choose one specific act of obedience. 7

III. Redemption: Christ Forgives Our Sins 8

Key verse: Colossians 1:14. In Christ, we have redemption and the forgiveness of sins. 6

  • Material: Our confidence rests in Christ’s saving work. We can confess honestly and depend on His grace rather than trying to earn God’s acceptance. 8
  • Supporting verse: Ephesians 1:7. Forgiveness comes “according to the riches of His grace.” 9
  • Illustration: Imagine a debt you could never repay and someone freely providing what you need. The illustration emphasizes receiving a gift beyond our own resources. 10
  • Application: Bring sin honestly to God, trust His forgiveness, and let gratitude motivate a changed life. 10

IV. Reconciliation: Christ Brings Us to God 11

Key verses: Colossians 1:19–22. Christ makes peace through His saving work and reconciles those who were once alienated from God. 12

  • Material: Reconciliation addresses our broken relationship with God. Through Christ, God opens the way for us to return to Him. 11
  • Supporting verses: 2 Corinthians 5:18–20. God reconciles us to Himself and entrusts His people with the message of reconciliation as Christ’s representatives. 13
  • Biblical illustration: Luke 15:20–24. The returning son confesses honestly, and the compassionate father welcomes him home. 14
  • Application: Return to God with honesty, extend a gracious welcome to others, and share Christ’s hope with humility. Pursue peace with wisdom and appropriate boundaries. 1314

V. Restoration: Christ Renews Our Purpose 15

Key verses: Colossians 1:15–18. Christ is Creator, Sustainer, and Head of the church. His authority gives our lives their true direction. 16

  • Material: The sermon applies Christ’s supremacy to renewed life under His leadership. Restoration begins now and points toward God’s future renewal, without promising that every present hardship immediately disappears. 15
  • Supporting verses: 2 Corinthians 5:17 describes new creation in Christ, and Revelation 21:5 declares, “Behold, I make all things new.” 17
  • Illustration: A restored instrument can make music again. Likewise, Christ renews our lives for worship and service. 17
  • Application: Offer one concrete area of life, such as your schedule, home life, or church service, to Christ’s direction. 18

VI. Conclusion and Invitation 1920

The Son is worthy of our whole life. Rescue gives us new belonging. Redemption brings forgiveness. Reconciliation restores our relationship with God. Restoration renews our purpose under Christ’s leadership. Our response is grateful trust and faithful obedience. 19

Closing question: What has the final word in my life, and what needs to come under Christ’s rule today? 19

Invitation: Turn to Christ in faith, repentance, confession, and baptism into Christ. Receive His forgiveness and yield your life to His rule. The closing appeal references 2 Corinthians 5:20, calling people to be reconciled to God. 20
